Lift Your Eyes | Event Photography and Videography
Lift Your Eyes, a Metro Detroit band started by Richie Rich, is self-described as a “deeply personal and emotionally charged musical project.” Their music comes from their quiet time spent with the Lord, processing through the realities of life here on earth. Richie writes songs with honest wrestling, hoping to share with people that they are not alone and that Jesus came to carry their burdens.
I’ve been able to work with Lift Your Eyes many times, photographing concerts and studio recording sessions. Their band members are humble and fun to be around, keeping the atmosphere light and enjoyable. Richie also runs his own recording studio, Stark Audio, where I was able to photograph band sessions and experiment with different lighting settings. It’s been great to have a long-term partnership with Richie and his band.
Concert and Event Photography
I’ve had many opportunities to provide event photography for Lift Your Eyes concerts, traveling around the Metro Detroit area to work with the band. It’s been fun to take photos in different venues with different types of lighting, layouts, and atmospheres. I’ve taken photos at concerts downtown Detroit (at Ghost Light Bar in Hamtramck and at Messiah Church), Chelsea (at The Rumpus Room in Chelsea), and more local venues. I often shoot with a Sony FX30 and edit photos in Lightroom to accommodate different lighting and compositions.
Recording Session Photography
I’ve also worked with Lift Your Eyes in Richie’s studio, photographing band recording sessions. Their team brings an atmosphere of fun while recording great music, and it’s been fun to be part of the process. This has also given me a chance to incorporate different lighting and editing styles, while also engaging in an audio environment, which is another of my passions. Music Video Production
In addition to event photography and recording session photography, I’ve also worked with Lift Your Eyes on music video production. Richie has brought creative ideas and I’ve enjoyed bringing those ideas to life. In one shoot, I used a Sony a6600 camera and a DJI Ronin SC Gimbal. Richie wanted to do a play on his song title “One Step” so we went walking and running through local parks to create many match cuts that really brought the video to life. We had great weather for the video shoot and Richie loved how it turned out. We also produced a music video for his song I Don’t Want to Feel, recorded in his studio during a live session. This was recorded with 3 cameras and multiple takes to change lighting color and mood. The cameras used were Sony a6600, GoPro Hero 8, and a DJI action camera. The action cameras were able to bring unique angles as I attached them to different parts of guitars, drums, and microphone stands, while I operated the Sony handheld to capture close ups and other dynamic angles.
